About Those Glaciers, What They Are Not Shrinking?

The Climate of Fear was wrong, the Himalayan Glaciers are advancing

The deeply flawed junk science report from the IPCC in 2007 predicted doom and gloom, gave rise to what became known as Glaciergate and has been proved wrong again by a new study that shows that the Himalayan glaciers are getting bigger, not smaller.

Meanwhile in Greenland, the Guardian are doing a lack lustre attempt at damage control, as previous fear texts from the Church of Climatology predicted the Greenland ice sheet slipping in to the sea

Researchers have discovered that contrary to popular belief half of the ice flows in the Karakoram range of the mountains are actually growing rather than shrinking.

The discovery adds a new twist to the row over whether global warming is causing the world’s highest mountain range to lose its ice cover.

It further challenges claims made in a 2007 report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the glaciers would be gone by 2035.

Although the head of the panel Dr Rajendra Pachauri later admitted the claim was an error gleaned from unchecked research, he maintained that global warming was melting the glaciers at “a rapid rate”, threatening floods throughout north India.

The new study by scientists at the Universities of California and Potsdam has found that half of the glaciers in the Karakoram range, in the northwestern Himlaya, are in fact advancing and that global warming is not the deciding factor in whether a glacier survives or melts.

So global warming is not a decisive factor in the well being of a glacier, over to you Al Gore.

Until now, it was thought that increased melting could lubricate the ice sheet, causing it to sink ever faster into the sea. The issue was a key unknown in the landmark 2007 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which pinned the blame for climate change firmly on greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

However, the impact of rising sea temperatures on melting ice sheets is still uncertain, meaning it remains difficult to put an upper limit on potential sea level rises. Understanding the risk is crucial because about 70% of the world’s population live in coastal regions, which host many of the world’s biggest cities, such as London, New York and Bangkok.

The Greenland ice sheet is safer than we thought,” said Professor Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds, who led the research published tomorrow in Nature.

“The Greenland ice sheet is safer than we thought”, another rock of the Church of Climatology comes crashing down.

  1. “… Climate Realist and against anything that is Left wing, Liberal, Labour, Democrat or Labor….
    .. :-) says it all, doesn’t it ?

What a load of self-delusional twaddle.

If you’d like a broader clue about global warming, just take a look at either the northeast or northwest passages. For centuries iced solid and non-navigable all year round, dozens if not hundreds of earnest marniers lost their lives trying. Until the later 1990s… when a private explorer found to his own amazement that he could get through the northwest passage all the way to Alaska.

Now, both are free enough of ice enough of the year annually that companies are beginning to use both as commercial shipping channels. The first two commercial freighter loads passed through the northeast passage, all the way from the Sea of Japan across to the North Sea, last year.

If you don’t think that’s significant melting, then you probably still won’t even when your trouser bottoms are getting wet.

    Dream on, deluded Tory :-)

    • The repeated lie that the first commercial shipping passed through just last year is idiocy. The Russians have run commercial shipping there for 150 years. Derrrrr

  2. Depends upon your point of view, we are poles apart on this.

It is a nice change to have a civilised debate about agw, thankyou for that :D

I think your information is a bit out of date regarding the amiunt of Arctic sea ice.

    http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2010/02/16/another-ipcc-error-antarctic-sea-ice-increase-underestimated-by-50/

I hope you find the link useful

  3. People who claim glaciers are melting, forget, the difference between land glaciers and sea ice.
Sea ice regularly breaks away but reforms. Now that we can stop all these CO2 alarmists you have to remember billions have been paid around the world for proof of AGW. Also now they are on the back foot
they will have egg on their faces again maybe someone will dare to charge them with fraud and ask for the monies back for perpetrating fraudulent reports.

I do feel sorry for people who still, through their ignorance of science, believe all this nonsense about
AGW. But there is worse around the corner, a new ice age or mini ice age that will make a few more
.C increases look insignificant. You are not telling me all these so called scientists haven’t forgotten that we are an ice planet and enjoying and I mean enjoying a glacial interstadial, and the Northern Hemisphere will be the worst effected should one start to happen. You can’t change the climate or the weather so stop trying to find ways and expensive ways to attempt it. Better put the money on sustainability measures. Like erect greenhouses when the snow comes.
