FORMER British prime minister Tony Blair says the only way to move towards a low carbon economy is to put a price on carbon.

Mr Blair caught up with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Melbourne yesterday, and fronted a joint media conference with her.

He would not specifically buy into the debate about the federal government’s carbon tax, saying it was a decision for the Australian people and government.

But, he said, there was a clear move worldwide to shift away from a dependence on carbon.

“Around the world right now people are moving towards a low carbon economy as the future,” Mr Blair said.

“The only way you do that in the end is you put some sort of a price on carbon.”

Pointing to the experience of introducing a European Union emissions trading scheme, Mr Blair said the policy process was always tough.

In 2004, when Mr Blair was still Prime Minister, he helped launch The Climate Group, a charity set up by multinational firms but also funded by the Foreign Office, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Greater London Authority.

He later took part in the organisation’s conference in Long Beach, California, where he spoke alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After leaving Downing Street, Mr Blair became the frontman for a political arm of The Climate Group, called Breaking The Climate Deadlock.

Its first report, published to coincide with the G8 summit in Japan in 2008, states that “additional financial support” was provided by “Mr Oleg Deripaska, Chairman, Basic Element”.

Tony Blair is set to earn millions of pounds advising an American businessman on how to make money from tackling climate change.

The former prime minister will be paid at least £700,000 a year to act as a “strategic adviser” to Khosla Ventures, a venture capitalist firm founded by Indian billionaire Vinod Khosla.

The Californian company bankrolls businesses hoping to profit from technology that helps reduce global warming and carbon emissions.

Mr Blair secured the job thanks to his “influence” and high level international contacts, whom he will be expected to lean on to open doors.

He has told friends he needs £5 million a year to fund his lifestyle.
