Warming Alarmist David Attenborough cheery picked data from an obscure 2006 report to exaggerate the effects of climate change in Africa

Here we go again, history repeats itself, the BBC and David Attenborough wildly exaggerating the supposed effects of Anthropogenic Global Warming.

The BBC has consistently broadcast Climate Change propaganda, so committed to the Green boondoggle is the BBC that they have declared the debate to be over with Climate Change skeptics, the BBC’s charter requirement of impartiality ignored in pursuit of Climate Religion, and all paid for by an  annual television tax.

Attenborough’s last production Frozen Planet was heavily criticised for faking shots of zoo polar bears, as wild animals, and the final episode was nothing more then Green AGW fear propaganda. The Discovery Channel and other international buyers of the Frozen Planet decided not to buy that particular program.

The final episode of Attenborough’s latest series Africa was broadcast in Britain last night, and just like Frozen Planet it was nothing more than the usual Green fare of doom and Armageddon for Africa, as according to Attenborough temperatures in the continent have increased 3.5C in the last 20 years.

That claim was  a claim too far, even for the Guardian, Leo Hickman writes:

The last episode was devoted to examining how the continent’s wildlife was at a “pivotal moment in their history”. Sir David Attenborough, the series presenter and narrator, explained to viewers what pressures many endangered species now face as they come into conflict with the needs of local human populations. He also devoted a section of the programme to the challenges presented by climate change.

But it was during this section that – like a meerkat sensing danger – my ears pricked. Set against footage of elephants walking beneath Mt Kilimanjaro, Attenborough said:

Leo if you were a meerkat in Attenborough’s make believe Africa you would be one crispy critter by now.

Africa’s climate is certainly changing. Some parts of the continent have become 3.5C hotter in the past 20 years.

Given that global temperatures have remained static for at least 16 years, a claim of a 3.5C for a continent the size of Africa seems curious to say the least, unless of course you are pushing an agenda, trying to keep a dying political ideology alive.

I also noticed some people on Twitter asking the same question. So the following morning I called the BBC press office and asked where this information about a 3.5C temperature rise over 20 years had come from.

I was told that it came from a report published in 2006 by the “Working Group on Climate Change”. The full title of the report was “Africa – Up in Smoke 2: The second report on Africa and global warming from the Working Group on Climate Change and Development” and it was “written and compiled” by Oxfam and the New Economics Foundation, with the support of a wide range of environmental and development NGOs such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF, Cafod and the Institute of Development Studies.

The pedigree of the report Attenborough quoted from says it all, Greenpeace, WWF, FoE, Cafod, NGOs that all play the Global Warming game  to advance their agendas for Green misery.

The date 2006, a time when Climate Religion was still on the ascent, a time when the more frightening the story was, the more it would be welcomed by  the Greens and politicians so that they could save the world, as Global Warming fear gripped the planet.

This  type of politically motivated fear based junk science that 7 years on, is now rightly recognized for exactly what it is, in the words of James Lovelock “This Meaningless Green Drivel”.

But however you approach it, Attenborough’s claim that “some parts of the African continent have become 3.5C hotter in the past 20 years” appears to fall down upon further analysis.

Personally, I find it bizarre – and frustrating – that an otherwise exemplary series, which took years to film, has been tainted – in my mind, at least – by such a sloppy piece of research. Why rely primarily on a seven-year-old report published an NGO? Why not just directly ask climatologists who would have the latest available data to hand? And how did the BBC’s researchers even come across such an obscure fact? You get the sense they simply Googled “Africa temperature rise” and went for the first thing they found.

Hickman stops short of accusing the BBC of pushing the Climate Change meme, instead he charitably suggests sloppy research.

Given the long history of pushing the Global Warming fear meme that the BBC has, the chances of sloppy research are fairly remote, the most likely truth is the direct opposite, much research was done to find the most obscure alarmist report possible, and then broadcast this as the BBC and Attenborough’s truth.

  1. I have a letter outstanding to Lord Patten through my MP Francis Maude regarding the”28Gate” cover-up. I wasn’t optimistic about receiving a constructive reply before I read this. Now I realise I have no hope. They just don’t get it, do they?

  2. Well said I thought that the programme would be about African wildlife, but all that we got was Attenborough pushing the global warming dogma. I turned it off.

  3. The decimation of Africa’s wildlife is manmade alright but it’s not via carbon dioxide, it’s via AK47’s, corruption and a baffling refusal of the greens to expose the criminals carrying out the slaughter. Instead they pick their battles with soft targets like the Japanese whose legal whaling activities pose no threat to whale populations but where they can generate optics of environmental activism at little real risk to themselves because they are “confronting” reasonable, law abiding people.

It seems that much of the raised temperature of this station is from a station move. There is a table in the document which states that Temp trends are 0.21 degrees per decade – so about 12% of the BBC figure.

  5. BBC is following the advice they recieived in: Warm Words How are we telling the climate storyand can we tell it better? Gill Ereaut and Nat Segnit AUGUST 2006

“Much of the noise in the climate change discourse comes from argument and counter-argument, and it is our recommendation that, at least for popular communications, interested agencies now need to treat the argument as having been won. This means simply behaving as if climate change exists and is real, and that individual actions are effective. This must be done by stepping away from the ‘advocates debate’ described
earlier, rather than by stating and re-stating these things as fact.

The ‘facts’ need to be treated as being so taken-for-granted that they need not be spoken. The certainty of the Government’s new climate-change slogan – ‘Together this generation will tackle climate change’ (Defra 2006) – gives an example of this approach. It constructs, rather than claims, its own factuality.

I found this on Jo Nova’s website with the search “BBC media bias”

  6. This is why I no longer watch any BBC “Docuganda” (propaganda disguised as Documentary). They get you all warm and fuzzy with some animal, waterfall, scenery, etc. and then hit you over the head with a blatant LIE.

  7. Leo Hickman has posted an update. He’s received this statement from the BBC:

“There is widespread acknowledgement within the scientific community that the climate of Africa has been changing as stated in the programme. We accept the evidence for 3.5 degrees increase is disputable and the commentary should have reflected that, therefore that line has been removed from Sunday’s repeat and the iplayer version replaced.”

  8. You sit on a website full of half truths and misrepresentation’s and pull small threads of contention from a documentary.
Get better informed or get out of the way of people trying to work on climate issues.
You people will be first in line to criticise when they discover forward climate estimates were grossly under estimated to please the boofheads out there.

    • Another person whose belief system is under attack, no warming for 17 years, computer models that cannot recreate past events, so many failed apocalypse events,

It must be a terrible blow when the Guardian calls into question, yet another bullshit fear story,,pushed out by the BBC..

I love your arrogance “Get better informed or get out of the way of people trying to work on climate issues” by better informed, I assume that like you I should ignore empirical evidence and instead adopt a chest full of unexplored ideas, as for getting out the way of Climate Change propaganda, THAT will NEVER HAPPEN. :D

    • Just “oh dear”.

      • … aimed at “Jim Thomas”, obv. Sad childish attack. I would suggest the very people you are attacking are better informed that you (and David Attenborough).
