Keystone XL On Track To Be The Biggest Green Defeat Since Records Began
The secret of any campaign be it military, or in this case Green protest is to pick a fight you can realistically win, otherwise you are likely to have your own Battle of the Little Big Horn and join George Armstrong Custer in ignominious defeat.
Keystone XL is a 1700 mile pipeline that will stretch from Alberta in Canada to refineries in Texas and Oklahoma, the pipeline will be buried 4 feet underground and have switch off points every 20 miles.
The Greens and warming alarmists decided that the Keystone XL pipeline was going to be their battle, they would defeat the pipeline and the evil oil sands of Alberta would forever stay in the ground, failure to obey the Greens would naturally lead to catastrophic global warming and the whole planet would fry as a consequence.
The warming alarmists and their scientists expected the great Green hope, Barack Obama would live up to his Green rhetoric and a put a stop to the whole project.
In a speech on the Climate Change in June 2013 Obama said he would give the go ahead “only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution“.
Everything depended upon a report from the State Department on the environmental impact of the pipeline, the report was released last Friday and concluded that building the pipeline will not significantly increase CO2 emissions.
On cue the wailing and gnashing of Green teeth started with usual outpourings of shock, outrage, horror and all the other negative Green emotions that always accompany the hitherto overindulged Greens not getting their own way.
Erich Pica, president of FoE in the US had this to say:
“The State Department’s environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline is a farce. Since the beginning of the assessment, the oil industry has had a direct pipeline into the agency. Perhaps most frustrating, is the apparent collusion between the State Department, oil industry and the Canadian government.”
By now you are probably wondering what the picture of a modified keyboard has to do with an oil transmission pipeline, well all is about to become clear.
Joining the Green banshee wail is climate scientist Michael E Mann, inventor of the iconic to Greens Hockey Stick graph which conveniently removed the Middle Age Warming period from history to prove Anthropogenic Global Warming was a late 20th Century phenomenon.
Mann even had time to award himself his very own Nobel prize, and to save the Nobel Institute the trouble Mann wrote the diploma with his own self aggrandizing text. The acutely embarrassing problem for Mann is that only the Nobel Institute can award Nobel Prizes and to date the Nobel Institute does not consider Mann’s work to be worthy of such a prize.
Writing in the UK Guardian Mann has this to say:
Now that the State Department has just released a final environmental impact report on Keystone XL, which appears to downplay the threat, and greatly increases the odds that the Obama administration will approve the project, I feel I must weigh in once again.
The simple fact is this: if Keystone XL is built, it will be easier to exploit fossil fuel reserves large enough to drastically destabilize the climate. A direct pipeline to refineries and global markets makes the business of polluting the atmosphere that much cheaper and easier.
Mann is right that the pipeline will make it easier and more cost effective to ship the oil, currently this is being done by rail and sea, and were the pipeline not built the crude oil would continue to be shipped in this way, with all the attendant risks of train accidents and oil spills at sea.
Mann who is never one to be confused by real facts then makes an erroneous comparison between what he refers to as “path dependency” and QWERTY keyboards:
Path dependency is the term use to describe the fact that once a policy is put into place, it then constrains future options to those within that policy framework. More simply, the choices we make now determine what choices we get to make in the future.
A classic example is the “qwerty” keyboard layout. Even though this layout may not be the most efficient, it was the first one, and so it became the standard. New keyboard layouts would have to compete with an established format, meaning consumers would have to adapt to a new system they had no experience with. On the basis solely of legacy, inferior standards or policies remain in place, more or less out of inertia.
Mann should really check his facts before making such statements:
The QWERTY keyboard was not the first keyboard layout, and it was designed on purpose to be inefficient, to prevent a mechanical jam that frustrated early experienced typists:
The first model constructed by Sholes used a piano-like keyboard with two rows of characters arranged alphabetically as follows:
- 3 5 7 9 N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
2 4 6 8 . A B C D E F G H I J K L M
Perhaps a little less self belief in his ability to walk on water, and more time spent actually checking the facts would save Mann from his own ego making a fool out of himself again, then again perhaps not.
As Zaphod Beeblebrox said in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy “If there is anything bigger than my ego, I want it caught and killed immediately“.
hat suitably tipped to the Galileo Movement for the keyboard graphic.
