Climate Science Wrong For 120 Years

Climate Science predicted in 1895 a new ice age, by 1902 the glaciers were melting and by 1912 the ice age was back.

Climate Science predicted in 1895 a new ice age, by 1902 the glaciers were melting and by 1912 the ice age was back.

Predicting the end of the world is part of the human condition, people have always been convinced Doomsday was just around the corner. From the soothsayers of Roman times casting their runes and reading animal entrails predicting global apocalypse to the soothsayers climate scientists soothsayers of the 21st Century casting their digital runes and predicting global apocalypse.

Despite the passage of 20 Centuries the modern day rune casters are no more accurate than their distant ancestors were, the expensive and religiously revered “Computer Models” have yet to predict any event that has actually happened, yet their erroneous results still trump observed empirical evidence.

The Climate Change catastrophe is not a new phenomenon, it first appeared as we know it today in the closing years of the 19th Century:

1895 – Geologists Think the World May Be Frozen Up Again – New York Times, February 1895

By 1902 the Los Angeles Times was reporting that the glaciers were disappearing, their final annihilation in just a few years was a matter of scientific fact.

Sound familiar?

It should, the 21st Century version of disappearing glaciers is known as Glaciergate.

However 10 years down the road and the Climate Scientists were unsure if the planet was warming or cooling:

1912 – Prof. Schmidt Warns Us of an Encroaching Ice Age – New York Times, October 1912

1923 – “Scientist says Arctic ice will wipe out Canada” – Professor Gregory of Yale University, American representative to the Pan-Pacific Science Congress, – Chicago Tribune

1923 – “The discoveries of changes in the sun’s heat and the southward advance of glaciers in recent years have given rise to conjectures of the possible advent of a new ice age” – Washington Post

1924 – MacMillan Reports Signs of New Ice Age – New York Times, Sept 18, 1924

1929 – “Most geologists think the world is growing warmer, and that it will continue to get warmer” – Los Angeles Times, in Is another ice age coming?

1932 – “If these things be true, it is evident, therefore that we must be just teetering on an ice age” – The Atlantic magazine, This Cold, Cold World

Just a year later and the story changed again:

1933 – America in Longest Warm Spell Since 1776; Temperature Line Records a 25-Year Rise – New York Times, March 27th, 1933

1933 – “…wide-spread and persistent tendency toward warmer weather…Is our climate changing?” – Federal Weather Bureau “Monthly Weather Review.”

For the next 40 years warming alarmism held sway until 1970 when we were all going to freeze to death again:

1970 – “…get a good grip on your long johns, cold weather haters – the worst may be yet to come…there’s no relief in sight” – Washington Post

Less than 20 years later and we were all going to fry again:

1988 – I would like to draw three main conclusions. Number one, the earth is warmer in 1988 than at any time in the history of instrumental measurements. Number two, the global warming is now large enough that we can ascribe with a high degree of confidence a cause and effect relationship to the greenhouse effect. And number three, our computer climate simulations indicate that thegreenhouse effect is already large enough to begin to effect the probability of extreme events such as summer heat waves. – Jim Hansen, June 1988 testimony before Congress, see His later quote and His superior’s objection for context

1989 -“On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, in effect promising to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but – which means that we must include all doubts, the caveats, the ifs, ands and buts. On the other hand, we are not just scientists but human beings as well. And like most people we’d like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climate change. To do that we need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination. That, of course, means getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This “double ethical bind” we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. I hope that means being both.” – Stephen Schneider, lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Discover magazine, October 1989

1990 – “We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing – in terms of economic policy and environmental policy” – Senator Timothy Wirth

The ultimate straw man argument, even if the problem is non existent then dealing with a non existent problem is the right thing to do.

One can only wonder what sort of world Senator Wirth inhabits, then you read his bio and the words Democrat and UN leap out at you, and there is your answer.

It would appear that climate science is cyclic much like the weather and ultimately the climate,  it struggles to predict with any degree of accuracy or precision.

  1. Furor Teutonicus

XX From the soothsayers of Roman times casting their runesXX

Sorry matey, but you will find the runes are a LOT older than those “Roman” newcomers, and had NOTHING to do with Romans!

    • Indeed some runes did precede the Romans, but they were also used by the Romans, some runes were also derived from early alphabets including Green and Roman http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/intro.html

      • Furor Teutonicus

Runes are runes, and NO, they do NOT include roman or greek. They are the three alphabets used in the Germanic area. The Kelts had something called Branch runes, or Ogham. Which are similar.

You should have had a word with my Grandmother. She was a Sammi shaman who was taught runes by her Grandmother who was taught by HER Grandmother, who was….. going WAYYYY back. She taught me.

It was also part of my thesis at Uni.

  2. Reblogged this on the WeatherAction Blog and commented:
Excellent summary of the psychosis which seems to overcome us. HH Lamb said this which covers some of the same period…

“The great period of warming, at least in the northern hemisphere, was during the first 40 years of the 20th century (especially the first and fourth decades), but in the 1950s and 1960s when the CO2 was increasing more rapidly than ever before the prevailing temperatures were falling. Callendar himself was worried by this discrepancy and contacted both me and Professor Gordon Manley about it. There seem, in fact, to have been a number of shorter runs of sometimes up to 50 years with either rising or falling temperatures often setting in suddenly, and with no clear correspondence to changes in the atmospheric CO2 content. We also see that account must be taken of psychological reactions—even in the influential research community—to the variations towards greater or less warmth as and when they occur.”

  3. As a long time “denier” of anthropogenic global warming, but one who believes the climate is changing as it always has —- I have begun to wonder about the “chem” trails I see in the sky above my little town in Ontario. I wonder about those who believe that there is a “geo-engineering” project or two going on in the skies above us. Those who perhaps think they can “fix” the “warming problem” [which of course does not exist] by spraying chemicals in the sky — which in turn come down upon our land and our crops. I notice that in several of the sites that deal with the global warming lie — the geo-engineering processes are never discussed. Perhaps one can be a “denier” and survive — but dare not speak of the ultimate activity of morons trying to fix a problem that does not exist

  4. Oh, sure. Wrong for those 120 years. But not now.

  5. The body of scientific literature that relates to the climate is very extensive but still far from incomplete. Very little is still known about the workings of Earth’s complex, non-linear, chaotic and unpredictable climate system.

What is known, however, is that many factors could be influencing Earth’s climate, including external factors (e.g. sun; galactic cosmic particles; etc) and internal factors (e.g. oceans; clouds; volcanic activity; etc).

What is astonishing about promoters of human-caused dangerous global warming alarmism, is their belief that by tweaking a minuscule rare trace gas in the atmosphere (CO2), and then only by a small fraction of the portion from human activities, that this can somehow prevent global average temperature rising by 2 degrees, which in turn will halt climate change.

From the likes of President Obama to Prince Charles, and Al Gore to David Suzuki, they honestly believe human-activity CO2 is the only factor that changes Earth’s climate. They honestly believe that by tweaking CO2 in this way it will halt climate change.

Contrast this to what a real scientist like geologist, Dr Sebastion Luning, can readily demonstrate. Luning can readily produce the evidence showing good correlation between changes in the climate over the last 2000 years (cold… warm… cold… warm periods) and fluctuations in solar activity. Yet over the same time frame, he can show the scientific evidence that indicates the atmospheric CO2 concentration was relatively stable and could not have played a part in the changes in the climate over the last two millennia.

At the end of the day, what the world is dealing with is a climate war… propaganda versus science. If the propaganda wins over the science, the world will pay an enormous price by way of unprecedented harm to animal and plant life, and economic damage of untold proportions.

  6. How can anyone ignore the history of the long term hot and cold periods that have been recorded for millions of years in the hundreds of exposed layers of the Grand Canyon. The bottom of the canyon starts with layers of tropical sea beds, recording the early forms of life. The layers change repeatedl from hot to cold, layers formed from long term freezing periods. The development and evolution of all forms of life are recorded there; including the periods of huge plants and animals that formed the source of our coal, oil, gas, etc.

All of this is undeniable proof that the earth has repeatedly undergone long term of wide temperature changes before man or the SUV,

Global warming and the support for (subsidized) green energy is, to me a perpetrated fraud for the benefit of the green energy clan. That and much of the environmental movement which lacks scientific supporting date is, in my opinion, is a development and outgrowth of Communism as a meant to achieve their goal, “complete control”. Educated intelligent people need to wake up, check the facts, and help to stop the harm and destruction this gross misinformation.
