There is a chance that levels of atmospheric CO2 could exceed 400 ppm next month, according to readings from the US government’s Earth Systems Research laboratory in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

So far this year hourly readings of 400 ppm have been recorded 6 times in the high Arctic, with such a symbolically important event about to happen the usual Green suspects have been begun wailing, and yes you guessed correctly, we are all going to die again.

In a wonderfully self-defeating story in the UK Guardian, Green evangelist John Vidal has heeded the call for CO2 hysteria:

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached 399.72 parts per million (ppm) and is likely to pass the symbolically important 400ppm level for the first time in the next few days.

Symbolically important, not scientifically important, just another natural event to be grabbed by the Green propaganda machine as further proof of humanity causing its own destruction.

Having largely rendered the story impotent with his opening paragraph Vidal then finishes in true Green style by continuing to make his hole deeper:

The last time CO2 levels were so high was probably in the Pliocene epoch, between 3.2m and 5m years ago, when Earth’s climate was much warmer than today.

The Pliocene epoch, that would be well before the industrial revolution then, and CO2 levels were higher than today, without the hand of man controlling the climate, now that does not match the Green narrative either.

So really all this story is about, is Greens crying wolf again about an event that has symbolism to just them, which really has been par for the course for the last 20 years or so.

Things are starting to slide for unelected EU Climate Commissar Connie Hedegaard, the rot set in prior to COP18 with EU officials saying that Hedegaards pushing for emissions cuts of 30% as fanciful thinking, next Hedegaard and her opposition to shale gas was ignored and now her plan to save the EU ETS has failed.

The European Unions climate change policy is at the point of collapse, the carbon floor price has crashed through the floor to an all time low of €2.63 a metric ton, after MEPs voted against “backloading” the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

The EU ETS has been in crisis for years, there was a huge €5bn VAT fraud, then the computer systems were hacked and down for weeks, the price of carbon globally has been in free fall and backloading was the last ditch attempt to save the ETS.

Backloading is essentially withholding from sale 900 million carbon permits in an attempt to drive up the price of carbon which continues to fall due to the economic problems and decline in manufacturing in the EU.

Commissar Connie described backloading as “no brainer”, ignoring the obvious irony of such a statement, Hedegaard had put her all her political clout behind backloading, the rejection by the EU Parliament is a decisive blow to Hedegaard and the Green Agenda she relentlessly pushes.

The European Parliament today voted narrowly to block plans to “backload” 900 million carbon allowances, forcing the proposed reforms back to the committee stage. BusinessGreen rounds up the reaction

”The Commission of course regrets that the European Parliament has not approved the back-loading proposal. However, it is worth noting than when it was suggested in the second vote that the Parliament finalised its rejection right away, this was not supported. The proposal will now go back to the Parliament’s Environment Committee for further consideration.

Bluster and hedge all you want Connie, slowly but surely the voice of reason is being heard in European politics, like today when 334 MEPs voted against backloading and 315 voted for it, more MEPs were in favour of economic growth than are interested in making the economic recession worse with more pointless Green gesture political taxes.

The wails of disbelief and misery from the Greens was predictable, there is no point quoting them here, you can all guess the usual meaningless Green drivel about Armageddon, polar bears, coral reefs and Kiribati that has poured forth from every NGO and watermelon on the planet.

The situation is best summed up by James Drinkwater of the Europe Regional Network of the World Green Building Council:

“Today is a desperately sad day for the EU; previously a world leader on climate change policy, and with many countries around the world developing their own cap-and-trade schemes, the message we have sent out is an overwhelmingly negative one.

Today is really good news for everyone in the EU, the hold that the climate zealots had on the EU apparatus is diminishing, instead the voice of economic reason is being heard, finally.

There is no doubt that Comrade Connie’s flying high in April moment has passed, instead getting shot down in May is going to be an increasingly common event as the balance of power shifts from Hedegaard and her unelected Green cabal to more realistic politicians like Günther Oettinger who is not blinded by the Green light.

Hedegaard has been a determined opponent of shale gas from the outset, along with the criminal Chris Huhne and his sock puppet replacement Ed Davey, they have recited every lie of the Gasland documentary as scientific fact, quite simply because cheap affordable shale gas will kill stone dead the vastly expensive intermittent Green energy generation they so believe in.

Last week saw Comrade Connie ignored on shale gas:

The EU’s chief scientific advisor has said that evidence allows the go-ahead for extracting shale gas, the energy source at the centre of a European policy tug-of-war.

The EU executive launched a green paper on 27 March, setting out Europe’s energy and climate aims for 2030, with Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger taking a favourable position on shale gas.

“I am in favour of producing shale gas, particularly for safety reasons, and to reduce gas prices,” he said. “In the United States, which is a big producer of shale gas, the price of gas is four times less than in Europe.”

Shale gas has triggered an industrial revival in the United States, which the International Energy Agency expects to become almost self-sufficient in oil and gas by 2035.

Hedegaard’s response was the usual predictable Green negativity:

Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard has adopted a less favourable tone on shale gas, believing its extraction in Europe bears little comparison with the United States.

“We do not expect that it will be so easy in Europe: geological conditions are different, and so are environmental rules and the activity of soils,” she told reporters at the launch of the Commission green paper last month.

The usual Green dogma about shale gas and Europe being geologically different to the US, a view contradicted by the scientific advisor to the Commission President:

But Anne Glover, the chief scientific adviser to Commission President José Manuel Barroso, contradicted this view and gave a scientific green light to shale.

Speaking at a debate on science and policy-making in Brussels on 9 April, she said: “As with all energy production, there will be risks involved whether that is wind or coal power,” Glover told the audience at the debate, organised by the European Policy Centre, a think tank.

“We should not go into a denial phase. From my point of view the evidence will allow us to go ahead [with shale production]. But in terms of extraction and production there are non-scientific issues to be debated,” Glover said.

As the balance of power shifts away from the Green socialists in the EU, Connie Hedegaard will no longer be seen as a major player in the EU, instead she will come to represent yesterdays policies, a political embarrassment and reminder of the failed fad of climate religion.

Even before Hedegaards fanciful thinking in Bangkok at the pre COP18 meeting was dismissed by EU officials, there was already the climb down over the EU flying tax that Comrade Connie tried to impose on the world, now two defeats in quick succession on shale gas and the EU ETS.

Comrade Connie has about a year left before the her period a Climate Commissar comes to end, just enough time for her to remain as the Green emblematic Albatross around the neck of the European Union.

The summer of 2012 was one of the worst droughts in US history, Barack Obama and other prominent Greens said the drought was caused by Global Warming.

The summer of 2012 was one of the hottest on record, America’s corn belt was parched dry, frequent comparisons were to made to the Dust Bowl disasters of the 1930s, but unlike the 1930s this modern drought was hailed as further proof of the hand of man influencing the climate.

The Boy King Obama, facing re-election in November 2012 immediately attributed the drought to Anthropogenic Global Warming, the usual Green suspects rallied around the king, who then received even more support for his theory from such Hollywood scientific luminaries as Bette Midler, the guy with the squeaky voice, what’s his name, oh yeah Matt Damon and Barbra Streisand to name the most irritating but a few.

So the stage is set, the good and the Green have written the script,  another weather event caused by CO2 and man, further proof of man made climate change, but was the 2012 US drought really caused by Anthropogenic Climate Change?

The answer is no according to scientists at 5 different Federal government agencies:

The summer of 2012 was the driest since record-keeping began more than a century ago, as well as one of the hottest, producing drought conditions across two-thirds of the continental United States.

Barack Obama and other prominent figures have repeatedly cited the drought as evidence of climate change. But the report released on Thursday by scientists at five different government agencies said that was not the case. The drought was “a sequence of unfortunate events” that occurred suddenly, the report said. The circumstances were so unusual the drought could never have been predicted.

“The Central Great Plains drought during May-August of 2012 resulted mostly from natural variations in weather,” the report said.

Those pesky natural variations are back and they always ruin a good warmist fear story, which always ignores natural variations as such, instead attributing them to human influences, natural cyclic events are treated the same way, because they simply do not fit the narrative of ideological or politicized junk science that underpins the Green Agenda.

But the scientists were clear in the report: “Neither ocean states nor human-induced climate change, factors that can provide long-lead predictability, appeared to play significant roles in causing severe rainfall deficits over the major corn producing regions of central Great Plains.”

As time goes by Obama’s settled science becomes less settled, when scientists employed by the Federal Government publicly disagree with the President about the causes of the drought, it shows clearly that Obama is just pushing a political agenda and attributing a natural event to help further his Green socialist cause.

There are some warmist scientists who say the conclusions of the report are wrong, if they believe this to be true then they should set about producing papers for peer review that support their hypothesis, for this is healthy and what science should always be about.

It is only science that is created to support a political ideology that can ever be settled, or subject to a consensus.

Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific where the mutineers from the Bounty settled

This is a classic case of government wasting tax payers money in an irresponsible way, all in the name of the International Aid Budget which currently stands at 0.7% of Britain’s GDP, and being Green.

Pitcairn Island is where the crew of HMAV Bounty settled, after casting the Captain of the Bounty, William Bligh adrift, the story has been immortalized in several Hollywood movies over the years so most people have some knowledge of the story.

The mutineers led by Fletcher Christian consisted of 8 British sailors, 6 Tahitian men, 11 Tahitian women, and 1 baby landed on Pitcairn in 1798 and remained there undiscovered until the US sealing ship Topaz visited the island in 1808. The people who landed in 1798 are the ancestors of today’s Pitcairn Islanders.

History is not sure what fate held became of  Fletcher Christian, he is alleged to have been brutally murdered on the island, other stories say that Christian made it back to England, though the logistics of doing this were nearly impossible at the time, for example today to travel to Pitcairn Island means flying to New Zealand, then taking 2 more flights and finally a 32 hour boat trip to reach the island, this place really does put the R in remote.

Pitcairn Island is a British Overseas Territory, a throw back to the days of the Empire, which means it receives priority foreign aid from the Foreign Aid budget, which is currently £43000 per islander. Estimates of the island population vary from 44 to 67, with 55 being the most popular, which is where the figure of £43000 comes from, considerably more than the average wage of £25000 in Britain.

On top of all the foreign aid money flowing in, the geniuses at the Department for International Development (DfID) decided that it was time for Green energy on Pitcairn Island and that a wind farm should be built:

The £1.7million scheme on the Pitcairn Islands’ was aborted after Australian contractors took the money but failed to build any turbines.

By the time it was cancelled the plans for the tiny island, made famous by the Mutiny on the Bounty, had already slipped three years behind schedule and the predicted costs had doubled.

In a report the Department for International Development (DfID) admitted that they failed to “rigorously manage” the green energy plans.

DfID have admitted they failed to “rigorously manage” this waste of tax payers money, yet no one has been held to account for negligence in the management of the project, it’s always the same story with governments and tax payers money, profligate waste with no controls on spending, no responsibility or accountability for those involved.

DfID spent £265,213 on the wind farm project, which began in September 2006 with contractors engaged the following year, and its website now classes the project as “complete”.

The cost included chartering a ship to take equipment to the islands, a move which later had to be cancelled as the shipment was not ready, the Daily Mail reported.

Eventually officials abandoned the scheme – which would have cost the equivalent of £31,000 per head.

The wind farm is abandoned yet DfiD’s web site shows the project as complete, priceless, a lot of money wasted and a government department has a failed project as completed, and by implication successful, the lying and duplicity is endless.

A DfID spokesperson said: “Where contracts are not good value for money and are not being properly delivered, HMG will take action to protect taxpayer money. This contract was signed in 2007 and by October 2010 was behind schedule. It was formally terminated in March 2011.

DfID do not say what steps they are taking to recover tax payers money, because quite simply there will not be any, the money will just be written off, after all there is plenty more money to be wasted, all supplied from the bottomless pit of the tax payer.

Rest assured there is now a new Green scheme in the pipeline for Pitcarin Island, a solar farm, and yes you guessed correctly, British tax payers will funding this new fiasco as well.

Afghanistan now it has joined the Kyoto Protocol is an ideal environment for rich countries to invest in solar and wind farms, as this quiet pastoral scene shows.

When this story first surfaced, the initial reaction was, April Fools day joke, how could a country with one of the lowest per capita emissions signing up to a treaty that expired on December 31st 2012 be hailed as a Green success story.

The world’s only treaty for fear of CO2, the Kyoto Protocol ended along with 2012 on December 31st, attempts to keep it alive at COP18 failed, an attempt at a new Kyoto 2 was ignored by most of the world, except the EU and grasping hands of the small islands states demanding their climate justice money.

All search engines confirm this story to be true, such is the state of decline of Big Green these days that a negligible emitter joining a now defunct treaty is a cause for celebration:

Afghanistan has taken another step towards implementing its national climate strategy by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

The move makes it the 192nd country or regional economic integration organization to sign up to the treaty, which will come into force for Afghanistan on June 23 this year.

Classed as a developing or Non-Annex I country, it will not have to adopt any binding emission targets, but will be required to draw-up plans to develop a low carbon energy and transport system.

Joining Kyoto also allows the country to take part in the UN’s international emissions trading programmes; raising the prospect of richer nations investing in renewable energy and similar low carbon schemes in Afghanistan.

According to the World Bank Afghanistan’s per capita emissions at 0.2 tonnes per person are one of the world’s lowest, they barely register, from watching the news videos of the country they have already developed a low carbon transport system, 4 people on a small Honda motorcycle is about as low carbon as it gets.

The Taliban would doubtless love to have Afghanistan covered in those symbols of decadent Infidel civilization, solar and wind farms, a couple of well placed RPGs and another un-insureable solar farm is destroyed, no doubt about it companies will be queuing up to invest in Afghanistan.

Ian Macgregor, who acts as an advisor to Afghan negotiators at UN talks, told RTCC the news should act as an inspiration to other nations.

“Given all the problems that Afghanistan faces, it is making the effort to join with the international community to address climate change,” he said.

“Other countries, which are not facing such severe problems, should be doing much more to address climate change.”

The real reason that Afghanistan has signed up is money, one day all that lovely ISAF money will be gone and the Afghans are looking around for a new source of free western money, and by taking part in UN emissions trading schemes they will be eligible for loads of free money from some UN climate justice or climate mitigation scam fund.

The citizens of Europe’s poorest country, Bulgaria, take to the streets to protest the cost of Green Energy and Poverty

There is a lesson to learned from events last month in Europe’s poorest country, Bulgaria, well actually there are 2 lessons to be learned, both unfortunately need to be learned by politicians in the rest of Europe, or the world when it comes to it.

The first lesson is that people will not put up with ever increasing electricity bills in the name of saving the planet while a few fat cats and crony capitalists cream off huge profits from Green subsidies on ordinary people’s and businesses energy bills, the second lesson is that Green intermittent renewable energy wreaks havoc on electrical grids, ultimately leading to brown outs and black outs as the grid cannot cope with the sudden Green energy spikes.

History shows that even a short period of rolling black outs will bring down a Government, even in a country like Britain, when in 1974 then Prime Minister Edward Heath took on the miners, with the resulting Three Day Week of rolling power cuts. Heath called an election in February 1974 when the Three Day Week was at its height, and effectively lost the election as he could not form a working majority for Government.

On February 20th this year protests at the cost of Green energy and the resulting increased poverty toppled the government of Boyko Borissov:

Protests against high electricity bills and poverty toppled the government of Boyko Borissov on Feb. 20. Now Bulgaria may suspend as much as 40 percent of wind and solar power capacity as part of its effort to stem oversupply and stabilize electricity generation.

About 40 percent of wind and solar power producers aren’t providing real-time information to the country’s central electricity dispatcher, jeopardizing the safety of Bulgaria’s transmission network, Energy Minister Asen Vasilev said in a document posted on the ministry’s website. They will be temporarily disconnected, he said.

That is a massive reduction in Green energy generation, attempts by the Bulgarian state energy regulator to curb Green energy costs by substantially increasing grid access fees has been ruled against by the courts who found in favor of 3 solar energy companies on March 15th, with more court cases by Green renewable energy suppliers to follow there will be no easy escape from Green induced poverty for the people of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria’s grid is suffering from power overloads caused by a rapid increase in wind and solar capacity coupled with decreasing domestic consumption in the face of a weak economy

Green energy renewable subsidies cause energy poverty for families and are a killer for jobs, the future for Bulgaria is somewhat less than bleak, unless the feeding frenzy of the Green vultures can be curbed, you can tell just how bad the situation has become with the Green Dream when EU energy chief Günther Oettinger says there must be no more new Green taxes on energy and emissions in the EU.

There are many myths, urban legends and downright lies pushed by Big Green about their Global Warming scam, the most popular being  “the rise in global mean temperature is unprecedented“, unprecedented in so much, that there has been no warming for 17 years.

Every natural event that has happened cyclically since time began is taken out of context, isolated and then attributed to man man Global Warming, the natural cycles of receding glaciers and calving ice sheets are more proof to the warming alarmists that the hand of man is at work here.

Warming alarmist computer models shows that increased levels of atmospheric CO2 will cause catastrophic global warming, computer models like opinion polls can always be counted upon to give the required answer, it is all down to how you load the data or questions in your favour to ensure the required answer is obtained, most climate models accept 5 million parameters for example. There is also the very real and always ignored problem that the climate models cannot reproduce any climate events from history, they do not even get close yet somehow we are supposed to trust their predictions for the future.

The Friends of Science have produced a list of the 10 most oft repeated myths about Global Warming:

MYTH 1: Global temperatures are rising at a rapid, unprecedented rate.

FACT: The HadCRUT3 surface temperature index, produced by the Hadley Centre of the UK Met Office and the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, shows warming to 1878, cooling to 1911, warming to 1941, cooling to 1964, warming to 1998 and cooling through 2011. The warming rate from 1964 to 1998 was the same as the previous warming from 1911 to 1941. Satellites, weather balloons and ground stations all show cooling since 2001. The mild warming of 0.6 to 0.8 C over the 20th century is well within the natural variations recorded in the last millennium. The ground station network suffers from an uneven distribution across the globe; the stations are preferentially located in growing urban and industrial areas (“heat islands”), which show substantially higher readings than adjacent rural areas (“land use effects”). Two science teams have shown that correcting the surface temperature record for the effects of urban development would reduce the reported warming trend over land from 1980 by half.

There has been no catastrophic warming recorded.

All the gloom and doom scenarios from the Greens are nothing more than what might happen based on their computer models, nothing more than conditionals like “could” or “might” being used as absolutes, normally backed up with the argument that even if there were no warming the Green Dream would make for a better more Gaia loving and just world, as Tony Blair said “the world must act on climate change even if the science is wrong“.

This does leave the question hanging in the air, why would you act on something, knowing to be wrong?

MYTH 3: Human produced carbon dioxide has increased over the last 100 years, adding to the Greenhouse effect, thus causing most of the earth’s warming of the last 100 years.

FACT: Carbon dioxide levels have indeed changed for various reasons, human and otherwise, just as they have throughout geologic time. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased. The RATE of growth during this period has also increased from about 0.2% per year to the present rate of about 0.4% per year,which growth rate has now been constant for the past 25 years. However, there is no proof that CO2 is the main driver of global warming. As measured in ice cores dated over many thousands of years, CO2 levels move up and down AFTER the temperature has done so, and thus are the RESULT OF, NOT THE CAUSE of warming. Geological field work in recent sediments confirms this causal relationship. There is solid evidence that, as temperatures move up and down naturally and cyclically through solar radiation, orbital and galactic influences, the warming surface layers of the earth’s oceans expel more CO2 as a result.

Levels of atmospheric CO2 rise following temperature increases, not temperatures rise following increases in atmospheric CO2 which is the Green meme, recently an IPCC scientist let slip that the last big rise in atmospheric CO2 followed a very warm year.

MYTH 6: The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has proven that man–made CO2 causes global warming.

FACT: In a 1996 report by the UN on global warming, two statements were deleted from the final draft approved and accepted by a panel of scientists. Here they are:
1) “None of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed climate changes to increases in greenhouse gases.”
2) “No study to date has positively attributed all or part of the climate change to man–made causes”

To the present day there is still no scientific proof that man-made CO2 causes significant global warming.

Every hour of every night is Earth Hour in North Korea where a subsidized economy run on the lines of the Green Dream fails to deliver enough wealth to keep the lights on at night.

The time for another pointless Green gesture is upon us, again, today at 8:30pm local time across the planet the WWF have declared that it is Earth Hour, where for 1 hour we are all supposed to turn off the lights, sit in the dark and get used to how life would be, in a Green world with a Green global economy.

Since the first Earth Hour in 2007 the event has been in decline, last year’s Earth Hour was a spectacular non event, this year sees some changes in Australia where some buildings will be lit with a Green light to symbolize the commitment to renewable energy, then are even prizes on offer to towns that make the most pledges to switch to intermittent renewable energy, the towns can win solar panel systems, so Earth Hour is good preparation for getting used to sitting in the dark when the sun goes down.

The WWF insist that Earth Hour is not about saving energy, but about making a Green gesture:

Last year saw the lights go out in homes and businesses in more than 6,950 cities and towns. The campaign even went into space when astronauts reduced power on the International Space Station. This year, more than 150 countries and territories are expected to participate, with Palestine, Tunisia, Galapagos, Suriname, French Guyana, St Helena and Rwanda joining the movement for the first time.

Reducing power on the international space station, the pinnacle of pointless Green gestures, this years new joiners to Earth Hour are those countries grasping for the Green Climate Aid money that they were promised by the warming alarmists, so it’s not a new global wave of Green enthusiasm, just people after free money.

Earth Hour has its share of critics, who say it symbolises environmentalism as living in the dark. Author George Marshall wrote in 2009:

“Asking people to sit in the dark plays very well to a widely held prejudice that ‘the greens’ want us all to go back to living in caves.”

The Greens want to de-industrialize society, have 100% renewable energy, do away with consumerism and have a zero growth economy, cave dwelling is not some much a prejudice as a more than likely outcome.

This year, Prof Bjorn Lomborg, a prominent critic of the economic cost of dealing with climate change, has warned the gesture will do little to help the planet and gives people the wrong impression about how to address climate issues:

“Global warming is a real problem, but Earth Hour is not the answer. Taken to its logical conclusion, if switching the lights off for one hour is a good idea, why not for all the other 8,759 hours of the year?

Another outcome from Earth Hour will be the massive increase in the emissions of the much feared CO2 from fossil fueled power stations when all those lights come back on, which renders Earth Hour as nothing more than a pointless Green gesture with a massively polluting CO2 footprint.

What the Greens refer to as debate, for that read indoctrination in the fear of CO2,  has been dropped from the National Curriculum for school children under the age of 14.

The teaching of Climate Change in British schools does not paint a pretty picture, Al Gore’s Powerpoint Slide Show aka An Inconvenient Truth was ruled by a High Court Judge to be a political film that contained 9 key scientific errors, and can only be shown with guidance notes to prevent political indoctrination.

Then there were Climate of Fear adverts run by the Department of Energy and Climate Superstition, at the time run by Ed Miliband, which corrupted nursery rhymes Jack and Jill and Rub a Dub Dub into Green fear memes, which  breached the Advertising Standards Authority’s guidelines, unlike the video at the top of this post which strangely did not.

In March 2012 Education Secretary Michael Gove said Climate Change propaganda has no place in British schools which is absolutely correct,  history shows the dangers of indoctrinating children with political ideology, if you need an example think Hitler Youth, or Pol Pot.

Now the latest draft guidelines for teaching in Stages 1 – 3 have no mention of Climate Change in Geography: and only 1 mention of CO2phobia in Chemistry, so grab your ear defenders because the Green wailing is about to begin:

The move has caused alarm among climate campaigners and scientists who say teaching about climate change in schools has helped mobilise young people to be the most vociferous advocates of action by governments, business and society to tackle the issue.

The Greens know full well that the younger and more impressionable the mind, the easier it is to mold into the required thought patterns and responses.

In the USA where in some states indoctrination in Climate Fear has run amok, there are now 12 year old and younger children with an outlook that is depressinglyfull of fear, gloom and self hating.

“Sometimes I wish we didn’t exist” was the response of a 12 year old girl when asked about humanity’s impact on the planet at an Earth Day event.

However, the UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC) said climate change was too important to be left to the whim of individual teachers.
